wunderloop Launches First Behaviourally Targeted Online Advertising Stock Exchange
LUXEMBOURG, March 20, 2007 – wunderloop, the European market leader in integrated behavioural advertising and content targeting, today announces the launch of wunderloop Connect – the world’s first open, self-service exchange for behavioural targeting-based online advertising. This is the first time that behavioural targeting has been made available to the entire online industry. Now, through wunderloop’s Connect, publishers and advertisers have open access to user profiles and can benefit from the drastically improved effectiveness, efficiency and conversion rates of behaviourally targeted advertising. Enabling precise targeting based on users’ interests, behavioural targeting allows for mass market online advertising and eliminates the problem of wastage – one of advertisers’ key challenges - as it ensures that online advertising targets the right person, with the right ad, at the right time.
Publishers benefit by retaining full control of user profiles and inventory, allowing them to determine which criteria and/or data is used, how it’s collected and how (or even if) it’s shared with other Connect members. Publishers are also able to set the value for their users, and for each creative advertising format and placement, allowing them to monetise as much as possible, and be in full control of whether or not they accept a deal with an advertiser. wunderloop launches Connect in response to positive feedback from major clients who had already been using behavioural targeting for online campaigns, and had been experiencing greatly improved efficiencies and conversion rates on their advertising. Based on these experiences, publishers approached wunderloop to develop a capability to connect a network of other publishers and advertisers to reach across select audiences on different websites, using set standards of profile criteria efficiently and effectively to access huge target groups in the most efficient and effective way.
Connect now enables publishers to do this and significantly extend their reach. Due to the openness of Connect, smaller websites are now also able to offer behaviourally targeted campaigns at no initial cost. Advertisers can book highly efficient targeted campaigns with just a few clicks, based on standardised data and criteria across target audiences offered through Connect. Connect was built using the same core targeting technology that has been developed and constantly improved for over seven years, incorporating research and development by leading mathematicians, advertising experts and psychologists. wunderloop’s technology tracks users’ behaviour and gathers their data in a standardised format.
The system then learns from shared user behaviour and implements standards for criteria and target group setups. This is important as it creates a critical mass of quality data and user profiles for advertisers who want to launch large scale media. Now any publisher that joins Connect deploys this core wunderloop technology across its websites. wunderloop realised that in order for behavioural targeting to extend reach for its customers, it had to be able to offer clients the ability to buy qualified and intelligent mass reach, and hence provide access to as many networks, sites and consumers as possible. The stock exchange principle overcomes this major issue which had been slowing down the market development so far and can deliver critical mass reach to advertisers and agencies.
Commenting on the launch, Chairman Michael Kleindl said: “At wunderloop we have gathered many of the leading figures in the advertising, consumer and media world to develop a company that will serve the on-line marketplace as it develops at an ever greater pace. We fundamentally believe, and the success of our clients’ campaigns show, that behavioral targeting transforms the online marketplace for content owners. In order for this market to develop and meet the demands of large scale advertisers, we need to see an open exchange on which any publisher can benefit from wunderloop’s technology. Advertisers will then be able to deploy mass campaigns, targeting consumers effectively whilst using a publishers’ inventory efficiently and profitably. This truly is a win-win situation and the reception we have had to date gives us every confidence for the future.” With anticipated industry-wide adoption, wunderloop believes that wunderloop Connect will transform the marketplace and usher in the next phase of online marketing: Online Advertising 4.0.
Online Advertising 4.0
The term Online Advertising 4.0 was first coined by wunderloop to demonstrate that the advertising industry has gone through three cycles; “It started in 1996 with the advent of Advertising 1.0, the days of banners and pop-ups,” said Michael Kleindl, Chairman of wunderloop. “2001 saw the next wave - Advertising 2.0, when Google and search marketing dominated the scene. Advertising 3.0 signalled the era of affiliate marketing companies and performance based marketing, such as pay-per-click or pay-per-purchase. Whilst Web 2.0 is being used to describe the new consumer internet era, advertising has moved into its fourth generation - Online Advertising 4.0.” Online Advertising 4.0 brings digital advertising above the line and allows advertisers to target consumers through conventional brand building exercises such as display advertising for the first time online. As a result of behavioural targeting, advertisers are able to intelligently target the consumer, based on detailed insight of that person’s interests and specific appetite for products at any given point and in real-time. This results in substantially higher returns for advertisers and, consequently, increased rates for media owners.
